Install only the official app for each state or territory on your itinerary. Opal Travel is the correct NSW tool. In Sydney, contactless cards receive most adult Opal fare benefits, but the airport station access fee sits outside the daily cap and contactless travel does not receive the weekly airport-fee cap. Victoria uses the Public Transport Victoria app, not a standalone official app called Myki.
Melbourne's contactless rollout is changing during 2026, so check the current official page and keep a physical myki as the conservative fallback until your route is explicitly supported. Queensland's Translink app replaced MyTranslink in August 2025. Contactless payment works across the South East Queensland network, while the permanent 50-cent fare applies across Queensland public transport except Airtrain as of August 2026. Perth accepts contactless Visa and Mastercard as well as SmartRider.
Adelaide accepts contactless payment across buses, trains and trams; Buy & Go is optional and can hold the visitor pass. Canberra's MyWay+ supports contactless fares. Metro Tasmania and NT Bus Tracker focus on planning and live information. Darwin public buses have been fare-free since July 2025.
Always tap on and off with the same physical card or the same wallet device. A phone, watch and plastic card are separate payment tokens even when they represent one account.
