SIM cards and eSIM in Bahrain

Buying a local SIM card ID registration required

Registration
Registration is mandatory and includes a fingerprint as well as your passport, which is unusual: expect the counter process to take longer than in passport-only countries. A local address or hotel card may also be requested, and your phone must be unlocked.
Tourist plans and prices
Starter packs come with data, minutes and SMS included: Batelco from around 4 BHD (roughly $11), Zain from around 6.30 BHD (roughly $17) and stc from around 7 BHD (roughly $18.50). stc also sells one-month packages at about 7.5 BHD for 22.5 GB plus 200 minutes, or 10.5 BHD for 100 GB of data only.
Where to buy
Operator stores for Batelco, stc and Zain across Manama and in the malls are the reliable route; Carrefour hypermarkets, convenience stores and supermarkets also sell SIMs. Don't count on buying at the airport, where SIM counters may not be operating. Batelco and Zain also let you order a prepaid SIM online for delivery within Bahrain.
Local eSIM
Because registration includes a fingerprint, even a local eSIM means an in-person counter visit: the biometric step can't be done remotely. A travel eSIM skips both the passport and the fingerprint, a bigger saving here than in passport-only countries.

Good to know

WhatsApp and similar voice calls may be restricted at times in Bahrain, though messaging works fine. A Batelco prepaid SIM works only inside Bahrain and won't roam. Starter packs bundle data, minutes and SMS, so compare total package value rather than the SIM price alone.

Local carriers

  • stc Bahrain

The former VIVA, with the best-rated coverage and fastest speeds. A safe first pick.

  • Batelco

The incumbent and largest operator, with extensive 4G. Visitors buy its Hala prepaid line, since postpaid is residents-only.

  • Zain Bahrain

The cheapest of the three, with performance close to the others and the widest retail footprint. Bahrain is small enough that coverage differences rarely matter.
