Belgium is easy to cross by rail, but local transport is split among STIB-MIVB in Brussels, De Lijn in Flanders and TEC in Wallonia. Install SNCB/NMBS for national trains and add only the operator app needed by your itinerary. Every train passenger must hold a valid ticket before boarding from 1 July 2026. Visa and Mastercard work widely, but a merchant's required electronic option can be a Belgian-only QR method, so carry a physical card and some euros. Bancontact Pay is not a normal tourist setup because it requires a Bancontact card issued by a Belgian bank. Brussels Airport at Zaventem has a station under the terminal; Brussels South Charleroi Airport is much farther away and normally needs a bus connection. Strikes can be announced at short notice, and pickpocketing is common at major Brussels stations. Check the relevant operator before every important journey and keep luggage within reach.
No Belgian payment app is an arrival essential for an ordinary short-term visitor.
The former Payconiq by Bancontact app was renamed Bancontact Pay on 16 March 2026, but the eligibility rule did not become tourist-friendly: official setup still requires at least one Bancontact card issued by a Belgian bank and verification through that bank. Do not download it expecting to attach a foreign Visa or Mastercard. Belgian businesses must offer at least one electronic method, but the law lets the business choose the technology. A QR transfer or Bancontact-only terminal can satisfy that obligation without accepting your international card.
Cash must also generally remain available for in-person consumer transactions, yet an outage, unattended machine or practical dispute can still happen. Bring two physical cards from different issuers, preferably Visa or Mastercard, and a modest euro cash reserve. American Express and Discover acceptance is much weaker. Ask before ordering at small cafes, bars, market stalls and independent shops if no card-network logo is visible.
Use a bank-connected or clearly branded ATM, cover the PIN and decline an offer to convert the withdrawal into your home currency. Your own bank or travel-money app may help with exchange costs, but Wise or Revolut is not a Belgium-specific necessity and neither unlocks Bancontact Pay. Never let a stranger scan a replacement QR code, handle your unlocked phone, or promise to complete a local payment in exchange for cash. Check the recipient and amount on every confirmation screen.
If a merchant says your international card is unsupported, use another card or cash rather than trying to bypass the Belgian wallet requirements.
