Migración Colombia describes CheckMig as a free, optional web form that can be completed from 72 hours to one hour before travel, although an airline may still request it in its own boarding process. Use only the official government website and never pay an intermediary. Cards work in formal city businesses, but carry Colombian pesos in small notes for public transport, markets, small shops and rural areas. A short-term visitor generally cannot open Nequi with only a passport. Private-car services arranged through Uber, DiDi, Cabify or inDrive operate widely, but Colombia's transport authority says those platforms are not authorized to provide individual passenger transport under the current framework. Use a dispatched licensed taxi when you want the regulated option, follow official airport procedures, verify the plate and driver, and avoid motorcycle passenger services. Keep your phone out of sight near streets and vehicle windows, watch every drink, and be cautious with new contacts made through dating apps. Call 123 for police, ambulance or fire services.

Bring at least two physical cards from different networks and a reserve of Colombian pesos. Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted at hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and formal tourism businesses in major cities, while cash remains important for markets, small stores, public transport and rural areas. Carry small notes because many vendors cannot change a 50,000 or 100,000 peso bill. At a card terminal or ATM, choose Colombian pesos rather than conversion to your home currency, check the displayed amount and keep the card in sight.
Use ATMs inside banks, shopping centers or other staffed places and decline help from strangers. Local wallet popularity is not the same as visitor usefulness. Nequi's own requirements say a foreign applicant must be a Colombian resident with a cédula de extranjería or a Permiso por Protección Temporal, a Colombian mobile line and facial verification. A passport alone is not the normal route.
Daviplata, PSE transfers and Colombia's Bre-B keys likewise depend on local financial accounts or identity. Do not borrow someone else's account or send an irreversible transfer to solve a checkout problem. If an online merchant only offers PSE, ask for an international-card link, pay through an authorized cash network if practical, or book through another provider. Tell your bank about the trip if required and keep a separate emergency card.
