Uber and DiDi operate, but Costa Rica's transport regulator still treats private cars working through unauthorized platforms as unregulated transport. Licensed red taxis, authorized orange airport taxis, buses and permitted shuttles are the regulated alternatives. Public transport has no complete national journey planner or ticketing app: routes are divided among operators, contactless payment is still being expanded and some buses still require colones. Cards work widely in tourist areas, but SINPE Móvil is not a visitor wallet. It is a transfer service inside participating Costa Rican banks and depends on a linked local account and phone number. Keep a modest amount of colones, choose CRC when a card terminal offers a currency choice and retain a second payment method. WhatsApp is genuinely useful for accommodation, tours, shuttles and restaurants, but confirm payment requests through a contact you obtained independently. Download offline maps, save exact entrances and landmarks, and verify rural driving routes with your accommodation or rental company. Reserve applicable national parks only through SINAC, check entry requirements before departure, and save 9-1-1 plus your insurer and accommodation contacts offline.

SINPE Móvil is frequently displayed by local businesses, but it is not a standalone tourist wallet. The Banco Central de Costa Rica describes it as a transfer service provided through participating financial institutions, linking a mobile number to an account in the national financial system. A traveler cannot simply download a generic SINPE app and pay from an overseas bank account. Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card where accepted and carry a modest reserve of Costa Rican colones for small businesses, local buses, tolls or a temporary card-network or internet outage.
US dollars are widely accepted in many tourist settings, but the colón is the national currency and a merchant's cash conversion can be less favorable. When a card terminal or ATM offers to convert the charge into your home currency, decline that conversion and choose CRC so your own card network performs the exchange. Check the amount and currency on the terminal before tapping, keep the card in sight and retain the receipt for a disputed transaction. Use a bank ATM in a secure, well-lit location, review the disclosed fee before continuing and keep a second card separately.
Do not recommend Wise as though Costa Rica requires it. Wise can be useful to an existing customer for funding or card conversion, but it does not replace local cash, guarantee ATM-fee avoidance or unlock SINPE Móvil. Contactless public-transport payment is expanding through SINPE-TP, yet it is not present on every bus. Confirm the validator before relying on a bank card and keep colones for the rest.
