Canada has no national transit card or standard tap rule. Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa each use a different fare system, while other cities may put the ticket inside their own app.
Plan the route first, then pay through the agency that operates it. A bank card usually works for adult trips in Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa, but you'll still follow each city's transfer and capping rules. Montreal requires more attention to zones and fare products. In Calgary or Halifax, an official mobile ticket can be convenient, but it must be activated correctly and stays valid only in that city.

A Canadian journey planner may combine a city bus, regional train and airport service, but the result does not create one national ticket. Identify the operator on each leg and check whether the same card, transfer window or pass remains valid. PRESTO belongs to participating Ontario systems, Compass to Metro Vancouver and OPUS to Greater Montreal.481
Each agency gives contactless its own fare rule. Toronto gives an eligible TTC transfer when the same credential is tapped again, Vancouver calculates an adult fare inside its zone system, and Ottawa applies separate adult caps. Changing from a phone wallet to the physical card can break the journey record.589
As checked on 25 August 2026, the adult TTC fare is CAD 3.30 with PRESTO or contactless payment and includes a two-hour transfer. TTC says monthly fare capping will start on 1 September 2026; that change does not add a daily cap for a short visit. The transfer follows the credential, so tap the same card or device whenever required and keep it available as proof of payment. Each rider aged 13 or older needs a separate credential; children aged 12 or younger ride the TTC free.45
TTC accepts international credit cards and supported Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard products, but not every foreign debit card. If the first tap fails, do not keep switching between wallet and plastic. Use PRESTO, another accepted card or a staffed fare channel instead.5
If a step-free Toronto trip depends on an elevator, check the TTC's live operating status just before departure and identify an alternative accessible station. A route that works on the map can fail when one transfer elevator is out.12
In Metro Vancouver, tap in and out on SkyTrain and SeaBus. On a bus, tap in only. Bus journeys charge one zone at all times, while SkyTrain and SeaBus can use zone-based pricing on weekdays before the evening flat-fare period. Keep the same contactless card or Compass credential throughout the transfer window.78
A bank-card tap charges the adult cash fare. Compass stored value can be cheaper per trip, and a DayPass may suit a day with several rides. Compare the actual itinerary before buying a pass because a short visit made mostly by bus may not recover the upfront cost.78
Greater Montreal uses zones A, B, C and D, and the right product depends on every zone crossed. Central Montreal travel is usually Zone A, while an itinerary into Laval, Longueuil or farther out may require a multi-zone fare. Check the zone line in the official itinerary rather than loading the cheapest product by default.1
Chrono now has two distinct NFC paths. OPUS Reload writes the purchased fare to a compatible physical card, which you must still carry and tap. A phased Virtual Fares rollout also lets Android users buy, activate and validate a fare on the phone itself. That virtual option is not available on iPhone, so check which path the app offers before paying.23
OC Transpo's O-Payment accepts one adult fare per contactless credential and applies its own daily and monthly caps. The credential is also the transfer and proof of payment. O-Payment stops at OC Transpo, so STO services across the Ottawa River need another accepted fare. Discounts and groups also need another fare channel.9
Calgary Transit My Fare and Halifax Transit's HFXGO separate purchase from activation. Buy while connected, but activate only when you're ready to travel and follow the operator's display or scan instruction. Only the activated ticket proves a valid ride; the receipt alone doesn't.1011
UP Express links Toronto Pearson with Union Station and accepts PRESTO or contactless payment. A debit or credit tap receives the one-way adult PRESTO fare. Eligible youth, post-secondary and senior fares require a properly configured PRESTO card. Tap off with the same credential used at entry.6
Vancouver's Canada Line applies the published YVR AddFare to many trips leaving airport stations. In Montreal, the 747 airport bus requires its dedicated fare or another product that explicitly includes the service; an ordinary one-trip Zone A ticket doesn't cover it. Airport branding is the cue to verify the fare before boarding.71
If a tap or mobile ticket fails, step away from the gate or boarding line and use the operator's machine, fare card, retail outlet or staffed channel. Store a physical backup card somewhere other than the phone case. A route screenshot can help with navigation, but the ticket itself must remain live and inspectable.521011
Cash is accepted, but the farebox or machine requires the exact amount and gives no change. Take the paper transfer as proof. Cash travel follows a continuous one-way rule and does not receive the two-hour window.
