Buying a local SIM card ID registration required

Registration
Registration is mandatory and you need a valid physical passport, not a photo or a copy. Staff register the SIM at the counter and keep a copy of your ID on record.
Tourist plans and prices
Local plans are cheap and actually beat the tourist bundles: Digicel's local deals run around FJ$8 (roughly $3.50) for 30 GB over 7 days, against a tourist bundle at about FJ$10 for 21 GB over 5 days. Both carriers also hand out a free tourist SIM with 2 GB at Nadi. All in, expect roughly $5 to $30 depending on how much data you add.
Where to buy
Nadi International Airport is the main and recommended point of sale: after customs, Vodafone is on the left of the arrivals hall and Digicel on the right, both open 24/7, and setup takes a couple of minutes. Both carriers also have stores across Viti Levu, though the Digicel tourist SIM specifically is only sold at its Nadi Airport shop.
Airport prices
None. SIM prices at Nadi Airport are the same as in city stores, so this is one country where buying on arrival is simply the right move.
Local eSIM
Both Vodafone and Digicel sell eSIMs to tourists in local stores, but registration still requires your physical passport in person, so a local eSIM doesn't skip the counter. Travel eSIMs work in Fiji but cost more for less data; with 24/7 airport kiosks charging city prices, they're mainly an arrival convenience.

Good to know

Take the free tourist SIM at Nadi, then skip the tourist bundles: the ordinary local prepaid plans give far more data for less money, so load a standard local bundle instead. Bring the physical passport. There is no 5G, and coverage drops off in remote areas and between islands (expect gaps in the Yasawas and Lau), so don't rely on data during inter-island transfers. Test the connection before leaving the shop.

Local carriers

  • Vodafone Fiji

The better network for travelling around the islands and the stronger pick on coverage. Runs a free tourist SIM programme at Nadi Airport.

  • Digicel Fiji

Cheaper, with larger data bundles: better value if you're staying in one area. Its tourist SIM is sold only at the Digicel store in Nadi Airport.

Sources and how current this is

Data checked July 2026

Source dates: Vodafone Fiji official Tourist SIM page: 2026 copyright, retrieved 30 Jul 2026 (OFFICIAL CARRIER - source of the physical-passport requirement) | Traveltomtom Fiji guide: ~9 Jul 2026 (FIRST-HAND, author states multiple visits) | Traveltomtom Nadi Airport: 21 Apr 2026 (FIRST-HAND) | Roafly: 8 Apr 2026, cites Digicel's official tourist SIM page and Fiji Airports | Fiji Pocket Guide (local guide): 19 Sep 2025 | Fiji High: 27 Mar 2024, source of the take-the-free-SIM-skip-the-tourist-plan advice | Sparkroam: 10 May 2026

Sources disagree: The free Digicel tourist SIM is described with either 2 GB or 3 GB depending on the account, and 5G status is unclear (not live versus being tested in Suva and Nadi); neither changes the advice. No official Vodafone Fiji tariff was retrieved, so per-bundle prices span 2024-2026.
