What to know about Payments in Bahamas

Visitors do not need a Bahamian payment app. The Bahamian dollar is fixed at one-to-one parity with the U.S. dollar, and the official tourism authority says both currencies are accepted interchangeably across the islands. Visa and Mastercard are practical at resorts, hotels, supermarkets, and many established restaurants, but card acceptance and terminal reliability fall away on smaller islands, at stalls, on jitneys, and with some taxis. Carry two physical cards from separate issuers plus small U.S. dollar notes. Ask whether a card surcharge or automatic gratuity has already been added, and check the currency and total before approving. Merchants normally charge cards in BSD; a card without foreign transaction fees can still process that at parity, while the issuer may add its own fee. If a terminal offers home-currency conversion, decline it unless the complete displayed cost is genuinely better. Cash change can mix USD and BSD. Bahamian notes are hard to spend or exchange abroad, so use them before leaving. Avoid relying on large U.S. notes because some merchants reject them. Sand Dollar is a real central-bank digital currency, but it is domestic-only, requires a wallet from an authorized institution, has low merchant and consumer adoption, and is moving through a wallet-platform transition. A stale tourist wallet listing and novelty value do not make it useful for a short trip. Use cards and cash instead. Sand Dollar is therefore deliberately removed from the app list.
