Barbados
Small island, big personality
Curated by travelers, verified by locals
Heads up
Barbados is a compact island where most things are within a 45-minute drive. There is no real ride-hailing scene here, so you will rely on local minibuses (called ZRs), taxis, or rental cars. ZR vans run fixed routes and are an adventure in themselves. Taxis are unmetered, so agree on a fare before you get in. The Barbadian dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar, and both are accepted. WhatsApp is how the entire island communicates, from restaurant reservations to beach chair rentals. Credit cards work at hotels and larger restaurants, but carry cash for rum shops, street food, and the Friday night Oistins fish fry. English is the official language, though Bajan dialect can take some getting used to.

Absolutely essential in Barbados. Every business, taxi driver, tour operator, and rental agency communicates through WhatsApp. It replaces phone calls, email, and even some booking systems.
