Uber is the simplest first ride app, but its official city index is narrower than the places where travelers sometimes find a live car, so check the exact pickup and keep an authorized taxi or registered shuttle backup. Book intercity transport and volcano trips through providers listed by INGUAT, travel on main roads during daylight and check PROVIAL, CONRED and ASISTUR before long transfers. Complete the SAT traveler declaration for air or sea arrival and departure using the official app or website. Tigo Money disabled new registration on February 1, 2026, removed its app and web access on April 1 and ended operations on June 30. It is not a current wallet or emergency cash solution. Guatemala uses the quetzal. International Visa and Mastercard cards are commonly accepted in Guatemala City, Antigua and larger tourism businesses, but cash remains necessary for local buses, lake boats, markets, tips, small shops and many rural services.
Carry small denominations and split cash from cards and documents. Exchange money only through the banking system, as INGUAT recommends. Use a bank-affiliated cash machine in a controlled location during business or daylight hours, shield the PIN and do not accept help from a stranger. Fees and withdrawal limits vary, so read the full screen and cancel an unfavorable transaction.
If offered a home-currency conversion, decline it and let the card network convert the quetzal amount. Some machines return cash before the physical card, so do not walk away until the card and receipt are recovered. Bring at least two physical cards on different networks because contactless access and some foreign cards can fail. Ask a hotel, restaurant or tour operator about any card surcharge before committing, and request the final quetzal total rather than accepting an improvised exchange rate in US dollars.
