Guatemala is not cashless. Keep small quetzal notes for public transport, lake boats, markets, tips and rural businesses, while using a no-foreign-fee card where it is accepted.

What to know before you go to Guatemala

Tigo Money ended operations on June 30, 2026 and must not be recommended. Uber is the simplest first ride app, but its official city index is narrower than the places where travelers sometimes find a live car, so check the exact pickup and keep an authorized taxi or registered shuttle backup. Book intercity transport and volcano trips through providers listed by INGUAT, travel on main roads during daylight and check PROVIAL, CONRED and ASISTUR before long transfers. Complete the SAT traveler declaration for air or sea arrival and departure using the official app or website.

Save Tourist Assistance at 1500, +502 2290-2810 and WhatsApp +502 5188-1819, but use the appropriate emergency number for an immediate police, fire or medical emergency.

Uber app icon

UberEssential

The simplest visitor ride app, with four cities in Uber's current official Guatemala index and additional live supply sometimes found around tourist centers.

Pro tip: Check the exact pickup before relying on service outside Escuintla, Guastatoya, Guatemala City or Quetzaltenango. Match the plate and keep an authorized taxi or registered shuttle backup.

inDrive app icon

inDrive

A widely used alternative where passengers propose a fare and drivers accept or counter, often with cash payment.

Pro tip: Choose a highly rated driver, agree only inside the app and carry the exact cash when no card option appears. A low bid is not worth a poor vehicle or identity match.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Yango app icon

Yango

A current Guatemala City ride alternative with Economy, Comfort and Moto options on its official local page.

Pro tip: Treat it as a Guatemala City comparison, not a national transport app. Confirm the vehicle, price and payment method before boarding.

Amarillo Express app icon

Amarillo Express

A long-running Guatemalan taxi company offering app, WhatsApp and telephone dispatch with a quoted fare and assigned driver details.

Pro tip: Useful when app-car supply is weak or you want a scheduled local taxi. Confirm the quote and assigned plate through the official channel before entering.

Food Delivery2 apps · 1 essential

PedidosYa app icon

PedidosYaEssential

The broadest clearly documented delivery option, with current service listed in Guatemala City and five secondary tourist or regional centers.

Pro tip: Set the exact entrance and zone, compare every fee and keep support inside the app. PedidosYa remains separate while the July 2026 Delivery Hero transaction is conditional.

Uber Eats app icon

Uber Eats

A convenient Guatemala delivery alternative for travelers with an existing Uber account, particularly in Guatemala City.

Pro tip: Check live coverage at the full address and review the receipt for a preselected or added tip. Keep a backup card for local payment failures.

Messaging1 app · 1 essential

View Messaging guide→
WhatsApp app icon

WhatsAppEssential

The main practical channel for hotels, guides, shuttles, drivers and INGUAT Tourist Assistance in Guatemala.

Pro tip: Save +502 5188-1819 for official tourist guidance, but independently verify changed payment details and call the proper emergency number for immediate danger.

Navigation2 apps · 1 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

The strongest general map for saved places, exact pins, driving and offline areas across Guatemala.

Pro tip: Download each region and save the entrance or dock, not just the place name. Check PROVIAL and CONRED before long trips because offline maps cannot show a new closure.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Waze app icon

Waze

A useful live-traffic and incident companion for driving in Guatemala City and on well-traveled roads.

Pro tip: Use it to compare congestion, not to override an official closure or local safety advice. Reject isolated, flooded or implausible shortcuts.

Transit2 apps

View Transit guide→
Tu Bus app icon

Tu Bus

Guatemala City's official Android app for viewing real-time locations of buses on municipal TuBus routes.

Pro tip: It covers TuBus, not the whole transit network, and has no current iPhone passenger app. Confirm the stop and payment method locally before boarding.

Moovit app icon

Moovit

A secondary planner with some Guatemala City routes where official information is otherwise fragmented.

Pro tip: Treat arrivals as estimates unless the app explicitly shows live data. Verify the route, direction and last service with an official or local source.

Travel & Booking1 app

Declaracion Del Viajero SAT-GT app icon

Declaracion Del Viajero SAT-GT

Guatemala SAT's official app for the electronic customs declaration required for travelers entering or leaving by air or sea.

Pro tip: Complete it for the correct travel date and save the latest confirmation offline. The official SAT website provides the same process, so the app is optional.

Language1 app · 1 essential

View Language guide→
Google Translate app icon

Google TranslateEssential

The practical Spanish text, camera and conversation tool for visitors, with an offline language pack available before travel.

Pro tip: Download Spanish and save critical allergy or emergency phrases. Use a human guide or interpreter where an Indigenous language or precise meaning matters.

INSIVUMEH Alerta de Terremotos app icon

INSIVUMEH Alerta de Terremotos

Guatemala's official earthquake notification and limited early-warning app from the national seismic institute.

Pro tip: Enable location, urgent notifications and sound, then test them. The automated system can miss or delay alerts, so protect yourself immediately when shaking begins.
