Slovakia uses the euro. Cards and contactless payments are common, but keep some cash for small businesses, mountain huts, rural stops and any failed terminal; choose EUR and reject conversion at an ATM or terminal. Bolt has far broader coverage than old Bratislava-only guides suggest, while Uber now lists both Bratislava and Košice. Public transport is fragmented by region: IDS BK is the dependable Bratislava ticket app, Cestovné poriadky CP is the strongest nationwide planner, and the new national Cyril system launched in July 2026 but is not yet reliable enough to be your only ticket channel. On trains, the official IDeme vlakom app can issue tickets but has very poor current store ratings, so retain the ticket email and know the website fallback. For hiking, use Mapy.com and the official Horská záchranná služba rescue app, not a road map alone. Mountain rescue beyond emergency medical care may be billed, so appropriate insurance matters. Call 112 for the general emergency service or 18 300 for mountain rescue.

Visa and Mastercard contactless payments are common in cities, hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, fuel stations and many ticket channels, while cash remains useful for small businesses, markets, mountain huts, rural stops, public toilets and any failed terminal. Carry a modest euro reserve and a second card rather than depending on a phone wallet alone. Use an ATM belonging to a recognizable bank, preferably at a branch, review any operator fee before confirming and decline dynamic currency conversion by choosing EUR instead of your home currency.
The conversion screen can sound helpful while applying a poor exchange rate. A bank or card issuer may still charge its own withdrawal or foreign-transaction fee, so check those terms separately. Apple Pay and Google Pay work only through an already eligible card and add no special Slovak capability. Local instant-payment and banking apps are not realistic arrival downloads because they normally depend on a Slovak banking relationship.
For parking, transit and app rides, verify foreign-card acceptance in the specific app and keep another method. Never approve a terminal amount until you have checked that it is in euros and matches the bill.
