Practical Slovak apps for city transport, mountain safety and intercity travel

22 apps10 essentialEuropeLast updated: August 2026

Slovakia uses the euro. Cards and contactless payments are common, but keep some cash for small businesses, mountain huts, rural stops and any failed terminal; choose EUR and reject conversion at an ATM or terminal.

What to know before you go to Slovakia

Bolt has far broader coverage than old Bratislava-only guides suggest, while Uber now lists both Bratislava and Košice. Public transport is fragmented by region: IDS BK is the dependable Bratislava ticket app, Cestovné poriadky CP is the strongest nationwide planner, and the new national Cyril system launched in July 2026 but is not yet reliable enough to be your only ticket channel. On trains, the official IDeme vlakom app can issue tickets but has very poor current store ratings, so retain the ticket email and know the website fallback. For hiking, use Mapy.com and the official Horská záchranná služba rescue app, not a road map alone.

Mountain rescue beyond emergency medical care may be billed, so appropriate insurance matters. Call 112 for the general emergency service or 18 300 for mountain rescue.

Ride Hailing3 apps · 1 essential

View Ride Hailing guide→
Bolt app icon

BoltEssential

The broadest visitor-friendly ride app in Slovakia, with an official footprint across more than 20 cities and regional markets.

Pro tip: Supply varies outside large cities. Compare the live quote and pickup point, and keep a local taxi fallback for early or rural journeys.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber app icon

Uber

A useful fare and availability comparison in Bratislava and Košice, but not a nationwide Slovak ride service.

Pro tip: Its Slovak footprint now includes Košice as well as Bratislava. Check the live service area rather than relying on older capital-only advice.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
HOPIN app icon

HOPIN

Local taxi-dispatch alternative with professional fleets in Bratislava, Košice and several other Slovak cities.

Pro tip: Confirm cash or card before booking. It is especially useful when app-based private-hire supply is thin or you prefer a licensed taxi fleet.

Food Delivery3 apps · 2 essential

View Food Delivery guide→
Wolt app icon

WoltEssential

The simplest visitor default for meals and groceries, with official coverage across 16 named Slovak markets.

Pro tip: Enter the exact address before browsing and compare the final basket with Bistro.sk, Bolt Food and direct pickup, including every added fee.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Bistro.sk app icon

Bistro.skEssential

Long-established Slovak delivery marketplace with more than 2,400 listed restaurants in its August 2026 store description.

Pro tip: Its delivery area is restaurant-specific. Use the exact accommodation address and compare the checkout total, not only the delivery fee.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Bolt Food app icon

Bolt Food

A separate food-delivery app from Bolt, useful for address-specific price and restaurant comparisons in supported Slovak cities.

Pro tip: Installing Bolt for rides does not install Bolt Food. Check your address and keep another ordering method because local support reports are mixed.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Navigation2 apps · 2 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

The general-purpose default for Slovak addresses, walking, driving and city transit, with downloadable road areas.

Pro tip: Use it for ordinary navigation, not as a mountain-safety authority. Verify live transit, closures and difficult trails with specialist sources.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Mapy.com app icon

Mapy.comEssential

Detailed outdoor map with offline areas and marked Slovak hiking routes, recommended by the national tourism authority.

Pro tip: Download the region before hiking, then check official closures, weather and HZS warnings. A mapped route is not proof that a trail is open or safe.

Transit4 apps · 2 essential

View Transit guide→
IDS BK app icon

IDS BKEssential

Official Bratislava-region journey planner and ticket app for buses, trams, trolleybuses, regional buses and participating trains.

Pro tip: Buy before boarding and read the shown validity. For simple Bratislava journeys, marked TAPni sa doors also accept direct contactless card taps.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Cestovné poriadky CP app icon

Cestovné poriadky CPEssential

The strongest nationwide Slovak timetable app for trains, regional buses and many city systems, with live data where available.

Pro tip: Use it to plan and check disruptions, then follow the linked operator or local system for the actual ticket. It is not one universal fare wallet.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Ubian app icon

Ubian

Nationwide journey planning with selected live vehicles and local ticket functions, including Košice mobile public-transport tickets.

Pro tip: Ticket features vary by city. Košice purchase requires registration and Ubian credit, and the ticket becomes valid one minute after purchase.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
CYRIL app icon

CYRIL

New government-backed national journey and integrated-ticket app launched in July 2026, with English and card payment.

Pro tip: Treat it as experimental for now. Recent reviews report missing stops and ticket products, so inspect the journey and keep an established fallback.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Travel & Booking1 app

View Travel & Booking guide→
GOPASS app icon

GOPASS

Specialist booking and pass wallet for participating High Tatras, Jasná, water-park and resort products.

Pro tip: The website can provide a QR ticket, so the app is optional. Check exact resort, date, operating status and refund terms before purchase.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Language1 app

View Language guide→
Google Translate app icon

Google Translate

Useful Slovak offline, camera and text translation for signs, menus and routine messages when English is not available.

Pro tip: Download Slovak before arrival and preserve the original wording. Confirm medical, allergen, ticket and safety-critical text with a person.

Intercity Transport6 apps · 2 essential

View Intercity Transport guide→
Cestovné poriadky CP app icon

Cestovné poriadky CPEssential

Nationwide timetable comparison for Slovak trains, coaches and regional buses, with live details and operator links where available.

Pro tip: Plan here, but buy from the named operator and verify the exact station. A search result is not itself a universal Slovak ticket.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
IDeme vlakom app icon

IDeme vlakomEssential

ZSSK's official English-capable app for searching and buying national rail tickets, despite very poor current store ratings.

Pro tip: Buy before the last minute and retain the email or PDF. If login or payment fails, use the ZSSK website, ticket office or another official channel.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Slovak Lines app icon

Slovak Lines

Official app for Slovak Lines coaches, especially Bratislava links with Vienna Airport and selected regional or international routes.

Pro tip: Use it only for a Slovak Lines service. Confirm the exact Bratislava or airport stop because the app does not cover every Slovak bus operator.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
RegioJet app icon

RegioJet

Direct booking and ticket management for RegioJet trains and coaches serving Slovakia and nearby international routes.

Pro tip: Install it when your itinerary uses RegioJet. Check the vehicle, stop and reservation because another operator's ticket is not transferable.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Leo Express app icon

Leo Express

Operator app for growing Slovak regional and cross-border rail services, including routes expanded during 2026.

Pro tip: Older guides may omit its newer Slovak routes. Install only for a Leo Express booking and verify whether the service is regional or reserved.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
FlixBus app icon

FlixBus

Useful for FlixBus international and selected Slovak coach journeys, with mobile tickets and service updates in one account.

Pro tip: Check the precise stop and luggage terms. Do not assume a scheduled international arrival leaves enough margin for a flight connection.

Utilities2 apps · 1 essential

View Utilities guide→
Horská záchranná služba app icon

Horská záchranná službaEssential

Official Slovak mountain-rescue app for emergency location sharing, warnings and communication with HZS operators.

Pro tip: Install before entering the mountains, allow location access and save 18 300. The app does not replace insurance, coverage or route preparation.

Play StoreWebsite↗
eznamka app icon

eznamka

Official Slovak electronic-vignette app for buying, checking and correcting motorway vignette records for any vehicle nationality.

Pro tip: First verify whether the rental car already has a valid vignette. Enter the plate and registration country exactly, then retain confirmation.

Buying a local SIM card ID registration required

Registration
Every SIM is registered to your name and passport number (an EU national ID also works). The online registration route is explicitly not instant, so buy in a carrier store where staff complete it on the spot in about 5 to 10 minutes rather than self-registering a supermarket SIM.
Tourist plans and prices
Prepaid starters are cheap: roughly EUR 1 to 2 for an Orange or O2 SIM and around EUR 5 at Slovak Telekom. Data is similarly modest, with small bundles around EUR 2 per GB, unlimited daily data from roughly EUR 1.50 on O2 prepaid, and 4-week bundles starting around EUR 3.
Where to buy
Carrier stores are the recommended route: Orange and Telekom have shops in Bratislava's Eurovea and Aupark centres and on Hlavna in Kosice's Old Town, usually with English-speaking staff. Supermarkets, post offices and convenience stores also sell SIMs, but you may be left self-activating. Bratislava Airport has no carrier kiosk at all: a Relay newsstand sometimes stocks O2 or Orange kits, with no guarantee of stock or late-night opening.
Airport prices
Availability is a bigger problem than price: with no carrier kiosk at Bratislava Airport you may simply be unable to buy on arrival, and what airport stock exists tends to cost more than city stores.
Local eSIM
Orange, Slovak Telekom, O2 and 4ka now all offer eSIM to prepaid customers, but a local eSIM does not exempt you from the registration rules. A travel eSIM skips that slow process entirely, which is a stronger argument for one here than in most of Europe.

Good to know

Do not plan on landing connected: Bratislava Airport has no carrier kiosk and the newsstand backup may be closed or out of stock. If you buy outside a carrier store, registration can take a while to go through. Expect genuine dead zones on all networks above about 1,500 m in the High Tatras and in parts of the Slovak Karst. Slovakia is in the EU and the eurozone, so an EU SIM roams here at home rates.

Local carriers

  • Orange Slovensko

Best 4G footprint and the broadest rural reach. The pick for the Tatras, Slovak Paradise and wine country.

  • Slovak Telekom

Fastest speeds in Bratislava and Kosice with 5G across most of the capital, though its rural 4G coverage trails the other two.

  • O2 Slovakia

Value-priced with solid 4G and strong 5G in populated areas, but slower and thinner in remote eastern villages.

  • 4ka

Budget operator with a small network of its own that falls back on national roaming. Not a great tourist choice despite the price.
