There is no essential public-transit app for a visitor. Santo Domingo's Metro, cable cars, OMSA buses, and newer bus corridors use a payment system that is being integrated in stages. A 2026 pilot permits one integrated fare from participating bus corridors into the Metro at selected stations when the rider taps a contactless Visa or Mastercard or an eligible mobile wallet and follows the required tap procedure. This is not a promise that every station, bus, card, or foreign-issued wallet works. Other services accept combinations of the SD Go or Metro card, contactless bank payment, and cash, depending on the route and equipment. Check the signs at the actual station, keep a small-cash fallback, and do not assume a transfer is included outside the pilot. The Metro itself is relatively simple, but mapping apps do not reliably cover informal guaguas or every changing bus corridor. Ask station staff, the accommodation, or a trusted local which stop and direction to use. Canadian advice recommends avoiding poorly regulated open-door guaguas and carros públicos and using reputable alternatives. Watch belongings in stations and vehicles, keep the phone discreet, avoid empty stops after dark, and allow extra time. For luggage, late arrivals, airports, resort areas, or an unfamiliar transfer after dark, a verified rideshare, official airport taxi, or prearranged driver is usually more practical. No app download removes the fragmented payment rules or the need to verify the route locally.
