What to know about Transit in Guatemala

Guatemala has no national public-transport app, and even Guatemala City's route information is split among Transmetro, TuBus and other buses. Tu Bus is the municipality's current Android-only passenger app for real-time vehicle positions on TuBus routes. It does not cover every city bus or replace official Transmetro information. Moovit can help sketch some urban routes, but current local reports say its arrival times are often estimates rather than live data. Confirm the route number, direction, stop and last service with the municipality, station staff or accommodation before setting out. Transmetro and TuBus use the Tarjeta Ciudadana system on supported routes. The municipality lists official machines and points for buying and recharging the physical card, and some gates or vehicles accept a Visa or Mastercard directly. Payment options and TuBus fares vary by route, so do not assume one method works across every bus. Keep the physical card or small quetzal cash as appropriate and do not depend on a resident bank wallet merely to top up. Public transport can be crowded. Keep the phone away from open doors and windows, put a backpack in front and avoid waiting alone at an unfamiliar stop after dark. TuBus tracking can fail if a vehicle is not transmitting, so treat the app as planning help rather than a promise of arrival.
