What to know about Payments in Nigeria

Nigeria is heavily oriented toward instant bank transfers, card terminals commonly called POS, and cash. That creates a genuine problem for a short-term foreign visitor who has no Nigerian account. OPay, PalmPay, Moniepoint, and local bank apps are not quick tourist wallets. A Central Bank circular requires a BVN or NIN even for new Tier 1 accounts and wallets. A tourist SIM exemption does not waive financial identity checks. Bring at least two physical international cards, enable Nigerian transactions with the issuer, and test a small payment early. Some terminals and online merchants reject foreign cards, while contactless acceptance is not dependable. Keep enough naira for immediate transport and small purchases without carrying conspicuous bundles. Eligible residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and supported European countries can set up LemFi before travel, complete home-country identity verification, fund it using locally supported methods, and send naira to a verified Nigerian bank recipient. This can help when a legitimate hotel, driver company, or merchant accepts only transfer. It is not a universal wallet and a transfer to the wrong or fraudulent account can be difficult to recover. Confirm beneficiary details through an independent channel and never transfer merely because a stranger says the POS is broken. Recent travelers report mixed international-card and ATM outcomes, so prepare more than one route to money rather than trusting a single app, card, ATM, or host.

LemFi

An optional remittance fallback for eligible residents of supported sending countries paying a verified Nigerian bank recipient.

Pro tip: Set it up and verify identity before departure. Confirm every beneficiary independently because bank transfers are not card payments and may be hard to reverse.
