What to know about Payments in Pakistan

A short-stay foreign visitor should not install JazzCash or easypaisa expecting a ready tourist wallet. Pakistan's mobile-wallet and instant-payment ecosystem is central to local life, but official onboarding is tied to eligible identity documents and local mobile-account processes. The State Bank's Asaan Mobile Account guidance says a Pakistani with a valid CNIC and active SIM can open an account, and the current consolidated onboarding framework relies on recognized Pakistani or resident identity categories. That is not a practical arrival flow for an ordinary foreign tourist. The old page correctly warned about the barrier but still recommended both apps, which was contradictory. They are now removed. Carry Pakistani rupees for smaller restaurants, taxis, markets, tips, rural areas and technical failures. Cards are useful at many larger hotels, malls, supermarkets and established businesses in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, but acceptance is not universal and should not be projected onto northern towns or roadside stops. Ask before committing to a purchase. Use an ATM attached to a recognizable bank in a secure location, inspect the slot and keypad, cover the PIN and avoid accepting help from strangers. Review any operator fee. If an ATM or terminal offers to convert the transaction into your home currency, decline that conversion so your card issuer performs the exchange. Withdraw before a long road journey because working machines and cash supply become less predictable. Keep two physical cards separately, enable issuer alerts, and retain enough cash to reach the next city. Mobile wallets and QR codes visible at a merchant do not mean an international card or phone wallet will work. Never transfer money to a driver or vendor outside the agreed platform because of an unsolicited payment message.
