Mobile payments and digital wallets, curated for travelers visiting United Arab Emirates.
A short-stay visitor does not need a UAE payment app. International cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in hotels, malls, attractions, restaurants and larger taxis, but cash still matters for small merchants, tips and occasional terminal or app failures. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Wallet can work when the traveler's home card issuer supports them; they are not UAE-specific apps to install after landing. Keep the physical card because the wallet token or foreign card may still be rejected. Carry a second card from a different issuer and a modest amount of AED cash. At a terminal or ATM, select AED and decline an offered home-currency conversion unless its full disclosed cost is genuinely better. Use ATMs attached to banks or controlled properties, read any operator fee before accepting, shield the PIN and reject help from strangers. Keep access to the home bank's approval method for online orders and transport apps. Local products such as Aani, Payit and UAE bank apps are designed around resident onboarding, UAE numbers or Emirates ID and add little value to an ordinary holiday. Refunds placed into an app wallet can also become hard for a visitor to withdraw, so ask for a card refund when a merchant offers a choice. Never send money to a personal wallet because a driver or seller moves the transaction out of the original platform.
