What to know about Transit in Argentina

There is no single Argentine transit app or ticket system. The most important 2026 change is that foreign contactless Visa and Mastercard cards now work on every bus equipped with SUBE, across all participating interior cities and the whole Buenos Aires metropolitan bus network, with no registration. Buenos Aires subway and premetro gates also accept contactless Visa and Mastercard cards. Use the same physical card or the same phone-wallet token consistently, and keep a second card because a new, expired or blocked contactless card can be rejected. Open-payment fares are the standard registered-user fare, but RED SUBE transfer discounts and social or local concessions remain tied to physical or digital SUBE. Suburban trains in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area still need a physical SUBE card, and a July 2026 traveler report confirms that digital SUBE was not accepted on a train. Buy the physical card at an official point when the itinerary includes Tigre or another suburban rail trip, then load and validate the balance as instructed. Do not make the SUBE app a default download. The current app is Android-only, identity verification scans an Argentine DNI, and SUBE Digital also requires compatible Android hardware. The Android-only Trenes Argentinos app is useful for live departure, arrival and service-change information on the operator's metropolitan lines, but it does not buy long-distance tickets and its ratings are mixed. Always check the station board and official service alerts before a time-critical connection.

Pro tip: Android only and not a ticketing app. Suburban trains still need a physical SUBE, and long-distance tickets are sold through the official website.
