What to know before you go to Ecuador

Carry small, undamaged notes and coins for taxis, markets, public toilets, buses and places where a foreign card or connection fails. Deuna and similar local transfers are resident products, not visitor wallets. Ride and delivery coverage changes sharply by city, and a service appearing in an app does not mean every private driver holds a local transport permit. Match the plate and driver, keep valuables out of sight and use an authorized airport taxi or a prearranged transfer when the current security situation warrants it.

WhatsApp is useful for hotels, guides and drivers, but verify unexpected payment requests through a separately sourced contact. Download Spanish and offline maps, then check current ECU 911 road conditions and government travel advice before intercity movement. Galápagos adds a transit control card, biosecurity inspection, conservation fee, insurance requirement and other evidence that should be checked on official sites before flying.

inDrive app icon

inDriveEssential

A widely used ride alternative with passenger-proposed fares and useful secondary-city availability.

Pro tip: Treat the fare as a proposal, select a highly rated driver and keep the agreement inside the app. Be ready to pay cash when no card option appears.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber app icon

UberEssential

The easiest visitor option in Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and several other Ecuadorian cities.

Pro tip: Cuenca is a recent rollout that Uber's global city index has not yet added. Check live supply and keep an authorized taxi or hotel transfer as a backup.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
DiDi app icon

DiDi

An additional ride option whose current official Ecuador coverage lists Quito and Guayaquil.

Pro tip: Use it as a price and pickup-time comparison in Quito or Guayaquil, not as the national fallback for Cuenca or smaller destinations.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Ktaxi app icon

Ktaxi

A licensed radio-taxi dispatch app covering Quito and numerous secondary cities in Ecuador.

Pro tip: Expect Spanish and a metered or cash ride rather than a guaranteed card price. Registration with a foreign number may require trial or driver contact.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
AzuTaxi app icon

AzuTaxi

A Cuenca and Azuay app for dispatching registered local taxis through the regional taxi network.

Pro tip: Keep small cash and confirm the pickup pin by chat or call. Recent reviews report cancellations and misplaced pins, so retain another taxi contact.

PedidosYa app icon

PedidosYaEssential

Ecuador's broadest documented delivery network, with restaurant and retail coverage across many cities.

Pro tip: PedidosYa remains a separate live app while the July 2026 Delivery Hero transactions await completion. Check the final fee and exact address before ordering.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Uber Eats app icon

Uber EatsEssential

A low-friction visitor option with broad coverage and an account shared with Uber rides.

Pro tip: Use the exact entrance pin and a recognizable landmark. Check whether hotel reception accepts deliveries before sending the courier there.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Rappi app icon

Rappi

A current food and retail alternative in Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and several other major markets.

Pro tip: Use it for a live restaurant and fee comparison, but confirm service at the exact address before spending time building the basket.

WhatsApp app icon

WhatsAppEssential

The practical contact channel for Ecuadorian accommodation, guides, restaurants, shuttles and drivers.

Pro tip: Ask for a pin plus written directions, but verify new payment details through an independently sourced contact before sending money or documents.

Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

The best general map for saved places, driving and offline areas, with local verification still required.

Pro tip: Download each travel area, save the exact entrance and check ECU 911 road status before rural or mountain travel. Offline maps do not contain live closures.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Waze app icon

Waze

A useful live-traffic companion for drivers in larger cities and on well-traveled roads.

Pro tip: Reject an isolated or implausible shortcut and follow official closures. Live traffic cannot confirm that a rural road is safe or passable.

Quito Nos Mueve app icon

Quito Nos MueveEssential

Quito's official Metro, Trolebús and Ecovía account, route, balance and QR fare app.

Pro tip: Create the Cuenta Ciudad with email and test a top-up before travel. Keep cash or a station-issued QR because foreign cards and app-generated codes can fail.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Moovit app icon

Moovit

A useful secondary route planner for city buses, including routes promoted in Cuenca's visitor guide.

Pro tip: Treat times and route geometry as planning help, not a ticket or an official service guarantee. Confirm the stop and last departure locally.

Google TranslateEssential

The most useful Spanish backup for offline text, camera translation and supported conversations.

ECU 911

Ecuador's official app for categorized, geolocated emergency reports and stored medical details.
