How it works here Uber operates in Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and several other Ecuadorian cities. Cuenca service began in late 2025 and is still missing from Uber's current global city index, while local authorities continue to enforce permit rules against some private app drivers.
Uber's current Ecuador directory lists Ambato, Guayaquil, Machala, Manta, Quito, Salinas, San Miguel de Ibarra and Santo Domingo de los Colorados. DiDi's current driver directory lists only Guayaquil and Quito. These pages establish an operating market, but they do not promise that a car is available at a particular street or hour.810
Cuenca needs a separate reading. Uber began operating there in November 2025, yet Cuenca is still missing from Uber's current Ecuador city directory. Uber and DiDi show an app-generated quote or estimate for the route and match the rider with a driver. DiDi asks the passenger to set pickup and destination, confirm the estimate, check whether card or cash is selected, and place the pin accurately. Review that payment line before requesting because the available methods can differ by trip.119
inDrive lets the passenger propose a fare. Drivers can accept or counter, and the passenger chooses among offers using fare, rating and vehicle details. Treat the final accepted amount as the agreement, keep the conversation in the app, and carry change when the app presents cash rather than a card option.1314
It is too simple to label ride apps either fully legal or banned across Ecuador. The Constitutional Court said the sanction for unauthorized transport is constitutional only where regulation gives the service a legal path to obtain authorization. Local transport authorities still control permits and enforcement, so a working app doesn't by itself prove that a particular vehicle is authorized for paid passenger service.3
Cuenca illustrates the practical risk. Local reporting in July 2026 said apps were not themselves prohibited, while authorities continued sanctioning paid passenger transport without the required municipal title. Quito's current taxi inspections check the professional licence, vehicle inspection, operational authorization, approved taximeter and visible fare information. A clearly identified authorized taxi is the lower-risk fallback when certainty matters.24
Compare like with like: the exact pickup, destination, vehicle class and current time. For inDrive, inspect counteroffers before choosing a driver. For Uber or DiDi, read whether the amount is a quote or estimate and whether the selected method is cash or card. Never assume a card saved in one app will be offered for every trip in another.1311
Keep small US-dollar notes for a legitimate cash ride and ask for change before leaving. If a card attempt fails, switch to another displayed method rather than repeatedly submitting the same payment. Guayaquil Airport publishes authorized taxi service 24 hours a day at the arrivals exits. It accepts cash and card, but card payment is handled at the cooperative office in the international arrivals hall. This is a dependable fallback when an app car is delayed or its pickup point is unclear.6
At Quito Airport, the terminal is in Tababela, well outside central Quito. Enter the full terminal pickup in the app and follow the assigned meeting point rather than accepting an unsolicited ride. DiDi provides driver and vehicle details, phone-number masking and trusted-contact tools. inDrive lets you choose among drivers by rating and car.
