China has extraordinary delivery coverage, but the smooth workflow was built for a mainland phone, a Chinese address and a customer who can answer the courier. The restaurant list is rarely the visitor's hardest problem.
Try Meituan only after the phone and hotel delivery address are ready. Alibaba's national alternative also appears through Taobao and Alipay, but it does not remove the same language, verification and handoff friction.

Not available here Uber Eats does not operate in mainland China. Meituan and Taobao Flash Shopping are the main local alternatives, but both can be difficult without a mainland phone number.
Shanghai's official visitor guide instructs users to enter a phone number when setting up Meituan and also covers Alibaba's current delivery service. A contact name and reachable number matter after checkout because the courier may call or message about the entrance.1
Recent travelers report mixed results with overseas numbers: some complete setup, while others encounter a mainland SMS demand during login or ordering. Treat that as variable account behaviour. Don't spend a meal window repeating verification when the property or a nearby restaurant can solve dinner.67
Meituan's official logistics site says a 3 km delivery generally arrives within 30 minutes and describes coverage across 2,800 cities and counties. Those are network figures, not a promise for one order. If the interface, phone or address fails, the size of the catalogue is irrelevant.14
Taobao Flash Shopping is the current consumer name for Alibaba's former Ele.me delivery service. Alibaba's fiscal 2026 filing says Taobao Instant Commerce is available through Taobao, the standalone Taobao Flash Shopping app and Alipay, so an old Ele.me recommendation may now point to a renamed product.2
Ask the hotel or host to write the property name, street address, building, floor and preferred collection point in Chinese. Save the same details as plain text. A translated hotel name or a broad map pin can send a rider to the wrong gate in a large complex.1
Confirm whether the courier may enter the lobby, must use a delivery cabinet or waits outside a numbered gate. Keep the registered phone reachable and watch the order after dispatch. If you cannot communicate by phone, arrange for reception or a Chinese-speaking contact to handle the handoff.13
An international card linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay may fund an eligible merchant transaction. It does not create a mainland mobile number, translate the menu or guarantee that a delivery platform accepts the account. Solve identity, address and phone access before treating payment as the final step.167
Do not leave immediately after tapping pay. Wait until the app shows a confirmed restaurant order, the correct address and a real delivery state. If checkout fails, check whether the wallet was actually charged before retrying and preserve the order screen for support.
Use AMap or Dianping to locate a nearby restaurant, then show staff the listing or Chinese name. This avoids SMS, courier calls and hotel access rules. Ask reception for a recommendation when business hours or the map pin looks uncertain.
City coverage should not be projected onto rural villages, mountain hotels or remote scenic areas. Check with the property before arrival and solve the evening meal early. Nothing already on your phone rescues this: foodpanda publishes its markets and the mainland is not one of them, and mainland delivery runs on Meituan and Alibaba.514
Ask reception or the host to order, call a restaurant that delivers directly, or eat within walking distance. For a late arrival, message the property in advance and arrange a meal before kitchens close. Do not rely on a public temporary SMS number for an account linked to orders or payments.
Meituan is the main service to try, with Taobao Flash Shopping as the other national system. Neither is an essential first-arrival app for someone without Chinese language and phone setup.
Some foreign numbers work, but many logins and orders still stop at a mainland SMS requirement. A foreign card linked to Alipay or Weixin Pay does not solve phone verification.

Both platforms have nationwide urban reach, but rural areas and remote scenic zones are far less dependable. Exact address, phone access and courier entry rules determine whether an order works.
