What to know about Transit in Egypt

Cairo's Metro is often faster and more predictable than road traffic for trips near its three lines, but the official app is a planning aid rather than a mobile ticket. Its Android app provides line maps, trip planning, stations, landmarks and fare guidance. There is no verified official iPhone equivalent worth recommending, so iPhone users should combine the Cairo Metro and Mobility Cairo websites with Google Maps. Metro tickets are bought at stations, and Mobility Cairo states that credit cards are not accepted for metro ticket purchases, so carry small Egyptian-pound cash. Check the destination and direction before passing the gate, keep the paper ticket through the journey and follow current signage for women-only carriages. Egypt's urban rail network changed materially in 2026: the East Nile Monorail began public passenger service on 6 May between New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital. The metro app does not provide a universal planner or ticket for the monorail, LRT, BRT, Alexandria transport, informal microbuses and every Cairo bus. Check the exact operator site for a newer line and do not assume Google Maps has every current connection or service hour. Travelers with substantial luggage, limited mobility or a journey after service hours may prefer a licensed taxi or app ride. Confirm the last train locally because hours can change for holidays, Ramadan or operational work.

Pro tip: Android only. It does not sell tickets, so bring small EGP cash and buy at the station. iPhone users should use the official operator websites.
