Local communities, businesses, event organizers, news publishers and marketplace groups use it extensively, so it can be more useful here than it is for a typical visitor elsewhere. WhatsApp still matters for hotels, guides, international contacts and people who do not use Telegram, which makes it a sensible secondary app rather than something to dismiss. Install and verify both before departure while your normal number can receive an SMS or call. Keep the original phone number active if possible, because changing to an Ethiopian SIM does not require changing the account number inside either app. Telegram groups and channels can be helpful for local information, but public posts, informal tour offers, currency exchange and marketplace listings are not verified merely because they appear popular. Confirm payment requests and booking changes through an official business contact. Ethiopia has experienced internet and platform restrictions, and mobile service can be weak or unavailable on regional journeys.
