Mobile payments and digital wallets, curated for travelers visiting Ethiopia.
Cash remains the dependable payment method for a visitor. Carry Ethiopian birr in small denominations, use ATMs at reputable banks or hotels and exchange foreign currency only through authorized banks or exchange bureaus. Keep exchange receipts. International Visa and Mastercard acceptance is strongest at larger Addis Ababa hotels, airlines, supermarkets and higher-end restaurants, but smaller merchants, drivers and regional businesses may be cash only. Bring a second card and do not depend on one ATM. telebirr is Ethiopia's largest mobile wallet and can be useful for a longer stay, repeated QR payments or paying a contact. Official registration accepts a valid passport, but the traveler still needs an Ethio Telecom number, identity registration and a way to load the wallet through an agent, shop, bank or supported remittance route. Recent visitor reports show that staff knowledge and account limits can vary, so telebirr is optional rather than an arrival essential. Register only through an official Ethio Telecom shop or authorized channel, and keep cash until the account and funding method have been tested. CBE Birr is a current local service, but adding a second Ethiopian wallet gives a short-stay traveler no clear advantage over telebirr and cash. Never share a verification code, let an unknown person register a wallet in their identity or use an informal street exchanger.
