Mobile payments and digital wallets, curated for travelers visiting Ghana.
Mobile money is central to everyday payments in Ghana, but it is not automatically available to a short-stay traveler. MTN MoMo is the largest local wallet, and Telecel Cash is the current name of the service formerly called Vodafone Cash. The apps require the relevant Ghanaian mobile number and successful identity registration. Official rules can accept a foreign passport in some circumstances, yet recent visitor reports show that tourist SIM status, wallet eligibility, account limits, agent knowledge and funding options can still block practical use. Start with cash in Ghanaian cedis, a working Visa card and a second card rather than making either wallet an arrival essential. ATMs are common in larger towns but less available in rural areas. Use bank or hotel ATMs, carry smaller notes and keep backup funds separately. Card acceptance is strongest at larger hotels, supermarkets, airlines and formal businesses. If staying long enough to need mobile money, buy and register the SIM in your own name at an official operator shop, ask whether the number qualifies for a wallet, then test registration, cash-in and one small payment before depending on it. Never let a stranger register a wallet for you, disclose a PIN or verification code, or send money until the recipient name and number have been checked.
