What to know about Transit in Kenya

Nairobi and other Kenyan cities do not have one dependable official app covering the complete public-transport network. Matatus and buses are central to daily mobility, but routes, stages, fares, payment methods and departure patterns can change and are not comprehensively published in real time. Swvl is removed because its Kenyan consumer operation ended in 2022 and the relevant entities entered liquidation. Google Maps can show some contributed matatu routes, but local users still report incorrect stages and estimates. Ma3wise is the only dedicated current app worth listing: its Android app, updated in April 2026, maps matatu routes and suggests boarding and alighting points. It is new, has no verified iPhone listing and should be treated as a planning aid rather than an authoritative network map. Ask accommodation staff, a conductor or stage staff which vehicle and boarding point to use, then confirm the destination and fare before getting in. Carry small Kenyan-shilling notes or working M-PESA because acceptance varies by vehicle. Keep the phone secured in crowded stages and avoid displaying it near doors or windows. For the first trip, luggage, a fixed appointment or travel after dark, a verified ride app is usually easier than learning an unfamiliar informal route. Official advice warns of serious minibus accidents, robberies and hijackings, so assess the operator and vehicle and favor daylight. Commuter and intercity rail have separate official channels and should not be inferred from a generic transit planner.

Pro tip: Treat its route data as a starting point. Confirm the stage, destination and fare locally, carry small cash or M-PESA and keep the phone secured.
