Rural road surfaces, bridges, ferries, landslides and seasonal closures can differ radically from the route on screen, and estimated journey times can be unrealistic. Ask the accommodation, transport operator or a recent local source about the same route, especially in the wet season or before riding a motorbike. Do not take an unverified shortcut because an app draws a line. Unexploded ordnance remains a serious hazard in Laos, particularly in affected rural areas.
Stay on well used roads, marked trails and established paths, never touch or move unfamiliar metal, and follow signs and local instructions. A path visible on any map is not proof that the surrounding land has been cleared. Motorbike travel adds poor surfaces, animals, limited lighting and weak emergency care. Confirm that the licence, insurance and rental agreement actually cover the vehicle, wear a proper helmet and do not leave a passport as collateral where another arrangement is possible.
