What to know before you go to Singapore

It is not a visa, and paid lookalike submission sites are unnecessary. On MRT trains and public buses, a foreign contactless American Express, Mastercard or Visa can be tapped directly without an app or account. Foreign Mastercard and Visa cards currently incur a S$0.60 administration fee per day of use, and you must tap in and out with the same physical card or the same phone or watch. Cards work widely elsewhere, but many hawker stalls accept only cash or Singapore-linked QR payments, so carry small Singapore-dollar notes.

English is the common language. The climate is hot, humid and prone to sudden heavy rain, so myENV alerts are more useful than a generic daily forecast. Singapore applies strict laws: vaping products are illegal, controlled medicines may need prior approval, and smoking is banned in many indoor and outdoor places. Call 999 for police and 995 for fire or a life-threatening medical emergency.

Grab app icon

GrabEssential

The simplest visitor default for licensed rides, airport pickups and food delivery with one English-language account.

Pro tip: Register and link a card before arrival. Compare the final quote with Zig or Gojek during rain and peak periods, then meet only at the marked pickup point.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
CDG Zig app icon

CDG ZigEssential

ComfortDelGro's official app for its large taxi fleet and private-hire cars, often a valuable price and availability comparison.

Pro tip: Check whether you selected a flat fare or a metered estimate. Metered taxis can add booking, peak, midnight and other regulated surcharges.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Gojek app icon

Gojek

A major licensed private-hire alternative that is useful for comparing live fares, pickup times and driver supply with Grab.

Pro tip: A lower quote is useful only if a driver is available. Check the estimated pickup and keep another app ready for a time-critical trip.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
TADA app icon

TADA

A licensed Singapore ride-hail service that can undercut larger platforms, with private-hire, taxi and advance-booking options.

Pro tip: Read the full fare screen for platform, card, ERP and waiting charges. Smaller driver supply can mean a cheap quote does not match quickly.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
RYDE app icon

RYDE

A licensed local backup for private-hire cars, taxis, larger vehicles, pet rides and advance bookings.

Pro tip: Use it as a live comparison rather than your only airport plan. Confirm the ride type and cancellation terms before accepting a match.

Food Delivery2 apps · 1 essential

View Food Delivery guide→
GrabFood app icon

GrabFoodEssential

The easiest delivery default inside Grab, with broad restaurant coverage, English support and card or cash where shown.

Pro tip: Pin the exact hotel entrance, compare the complete basket with foodpanda, and expect longer waits during heavy rain and dinner peaks.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
foodpanda app icon

foodpanda

Singapore's other major delivery platform, useful for different merchants, discounts and final-basket comparisons.

Pro tip: Check the delivered total rather than the voucher alone. Confirm the map pin and watch for service, small-order and delivery fees before paying.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Payments1 app

View Payments guide→
Wise app icon

Wise

An optional travel card and QR tool that can pay eligible business PayNow codes, but not every hawker or personal QR.

Pro tip: Use it only with an already verified eligible account. Non-Singapore customers cannot pay personal PayNow recipients, so keep SGD cash and another card.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Messaging2 apps · 1 essential

View Messaging guide→
WhatsApp app icon

WhatsAppEssential

The most useful local messenger for hotels, guides, restaurants, businesses and personal contacts in Singapore.

Pro tip: Open business chats from an official site or booking. Verify unexpected payment requests elsewhere and never share an OTP or Singpass detail.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Telegram app icon

Telegram

A useful secondary messenger for Singapore community groups, event channels, alerts and contacts who specifically request it.

Pro tip: Join only links from a trusted organizer. Public groups and unsolicited direct messages are frequent scam routes, not proof of local legitimacy.

Navigation1 app · 1 essential

View Navigation guide→
Google Maps app icon

Google MapsEssential

The best all-purpose map for Singapore walking, public transport, places and live rail-disruption information.

Pro tip: Check the exact MRT exit, mall level or pickup lobby. Download the area for backup, but offline maps do not provide full transit routing.

Super Apps1 app · 1 essential

View Super Apps guide→
Grab app icon

GrabEssential

Singapore's most useful visitor super app for rides, taxis, food and groceries with one account and linked card.

Pro tip: Use a linked card inside Grab without topping up GrabPay. Compare prices elsewhere and carry cash because tourist QR-wallet access is not universal.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Transit3 apps · 1 essential

View Transit guide→
MyTransport.SG app icon

MyTransport.SGEssential

LTA's official companion for bus arrivals, nearby stops, rail information, crowding and transport disruption alerts.

Pro tip: Use it for live bus times and official alerts, but plan the whole route in Google Maps or Citymapper and check station displays during an outage.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
SimplyGo app icon

SimplyGo

The official fare and travel-card app, useful in Guest Mode even though visitors do not need it to tap a bank card.

Pro tip: Foreign numbers cannot create a full account. Use Guest Mode for planning and fare tools, and tap your bank card directly without linking it.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Citymapper app icon

Citymapper

A polished Singapore transit planner with MRT, bus, walking options, station exits and an offline rail map.

Pro tip: Use it as a route comparison, not an authority during disruption. Confirm major changes in MyTransport.SG or on station displays.

MyICA Mobile app icon

MyICA MobileEssential

Singapore ICA's free official app for the SG Arrival Card, passport scanning, group submissions and retrieving records.

Pro tip: Submit within three days before arrival. The card is free and is not a visa; use ICA's web form if scanning or a saved draft fails.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
Changi App app icon

Changi App

Changi Airport's official app for saved-flight alerts, airport maps, supported baggage tracking and attraction bookings.

Pro tip: Use it for airport logistics, but verify flight changes with the airline and terminal screens. Most visitors do not need its wallet or rewards features.

Language1 app

View Language guide→
Google Translate app icon

Google Translate

An optional camera, text and offline aid for Mandarin, Malay or Tamil; English already covers almost every visitor task.

Pro tip: Download only the needed packs and confirm allergies or medical details with a person. Camera translation can misread stylized hawker menus.

Intercity Transport2 apps

KITS Style app icon

KITS Style

KTMB's official ticketing app for Shuttle Tebrau between Woodlands and JB Sentral and onward Malaysian trains.

Pro tip: Book popular crossings early and enter passport details exactly. Keep the digital ticket, and leave enough time for both countries' immigration checks.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
BatamFast Online Ferry Booking app icon

BatamFast Online Ferry Booking

BatamFast's official app for Singapore, Batam and Malaysia ferry schedules, direct tickets and trip management.

Pro tip: Confirm both terminals, the check-in cutoff and the full fare including surcharges. Compare the direct sites of other operators before booking.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗

Utilities2 apps

View Utilities guide→
myENV app icon

myENV

Singapore's official weather and environment app for heavy rain, lightning, floods, haze, air quality and hawker information.

Pro tip: Save your hotel and planned areas, then enable only useful alerts. Sudden rain and lightning can differ sharply across the island.

App StorePlay StoreWebsite↗
ScamShield app icon

ScamShield

Singapore's official tool for checking and reporting suspicious calls, messages, links and screenshots and filtering known scams.

Pro tip: A check is not a guarantee and an app report is not a police report. Call 1799 for scam guidance or 999 for an immediate police emergency.
