Contactless Visa and Mastercard work widely at hotels, malls, attractions, supermarkets, restaurants and many taxis, and eligible foreign American Express, Mastercard and Visa cards can be tapped directly on public transport. The important exception is hawker centres, wet markets and small neighborhood merchants. Many display SGQR, PayNow or NETS QR, but those signs do not mean that every foreign wallet can pay them. PayNow is primarily linked to participating Singapore financial institutions, and apps such as DBS PayLah!
are not sensible recommendations for an ordinary tourist. Wise now supports Singapore PayNow QR payments for customers, but people based outside Singapore can pay business QR codes only. Personal PayNow recipients will fail. NETS QR availability also depends on the traveler's Wise registration country, so cash remains necessary.
If you already have an eligible, verified Wise account, test a small business payment and read the confirmation screen before showing it to the merchant. Do not install it solely on arrival expecting universal QR access. Carry small Singapore-dollar notes for stalls, drinks and outages, while keeping a second card from a different network. On public transport, tap in and out with the same physical card or the same mobile-wallet device; the physical card and its phone token are treated as different cards.
Foreign Mastercard and Visa cards currently incur a S$0.60 administration fee for each day used on transit. Decline any offer to charge a purchase or ATM withdrawal in your home currency and choose Singapore dollars instead.
