Laos is still primarily cash-based for foreign tourists. Cross-border QR payment systems are rolling out between Laos and Thailand (via KMA Krungsri and Bangkok Bank apps scanning LaoQR codes). UnionPay QR works at tens of thousands of merchants through BCEL. BCEL One is the main local mobile banking app. Carry USD or Thai Baht as backup to Lao Kip. ATMs are available in Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
