Macau is easy to pay in once you stop looking for one universal method. Cards handle much of the resort economy, pataca cash handles the gaps, and public transport has its own rules.
Bring two physical cards and obtain a modest amount of Macau patacas. Use cards at larger businesses, exact cash or Macau Pass on buses, and do not open MPay solely for a short visit.

The pataca is Macau's official currency. Macau's tourism office publishes an indicative relationship of MOP103.20 to HKD100, so the currencies are close but unequal. Use patacas when practical, especially for cash purchases.1
Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted, but each merchant sets the practical cash conversion it offers. At one HKD per MOP, that convenience costs roughly 3 percent against the official relationship. Check the displayed rate and the currency of any change. Don't exchange a large amount solely for a brief transit, but prefer patacas for repeated small purchases.17
Macau's tourism office lists major international card networks at many establishments, including Visa and Mastercard. Carry two physical cards from different issuers because one terminal or fraud check can still fail. When offered a choice, pay in MOP rather than accepting conversion into your home currency.1
MPay is a major resident wallet that a short stay can skip. Some overseas wallets connected through Alipay+ work at participating merchants, but support depends on the exact home-market wallet. Use one you already have after confirming eligibility; don't build the trip around opening a Macau financial account.17
The public-bus fare is MOP6. Cash boxes do not give change, so carry the exact amount or tap a physical Macau Pass. Ordinary foreign contactless bank cards don't provide universal access to the bus fare reader.28
Macau expanded bus QR payments in 2026 to named mainland China and Hong Kong versions of WeChat Pay and Alipay, including a companion-code feature for up to two other passengers. That announcement does not say every international Alipay or WeChat account will work.34
For the Macau LRT, buy a single-journey ticket at the station or use a physical Macau Pass. Staffed customer-service counters list several card and wallet options, but that does not turn every gate into a foreign contactless-card reader.5
For an ordinary street or rank taxi, ask about electronic payment before departure and keep cash. A taxi booked through Uber Meter Taxi is different: Uber says it accepts credit cards and Apple Pay only, the driver enters the metered amount and the app processes the selected method. Do not hand over cash again.26
Use an ATM or staffed exchange point to create a reserve of small pataca notes and coins for buses, small merchants and taxi uncertainty. Keep the main cards separately and retain enough cash for the return to the hotel if one payment system fails.17
Anyone carrying cash or negotiable instruments worth MOP120,000 or more is subject to Macau's declaration system. Ordinary holiday spending will never approach that threshold, but it matters when transporting a genuinely large amount.1
If a terminal or wallet fails, use the second physical card or pay in patacas. Ask a hotel or staffed transport counter where to obtain change or a Macau Pass. Never let an unfamiliar QR code or an unsolicited helper turn a routine payment failure into a transfer outside the original merchant.
