VPNs and other tools worth installing before you go, curated for travelers visiting New Zealand.
Two official entry tools and two official information sources are especially useful. Every traveler must complete the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration, including children and transit passengers when the rules apply to their journey. It can be submitted through the official NZTD app or website, normally from 24 hours before starting the trip to New Zealand. A paper form remains available in relevant circumstances, so do not pay a third party. NZeTA is separate and only required for eligible visa-waiver travelers, cruise passengers and certain other groups. Check Immigration New Zealand for your passport and status before travel. The official NZeTA app can scan a passport and submit a request, but approval can take up to 72 hours, so it is not an arrival task. MetService is the national weather service and its app provides forecasts and warnings. GeoNet supplies New Zealand earthquake and volcanic information, but phone notifications cannot predict an earthquake and may arrive after shaking. Official Emergency Mobile Alerts require no downloaded app. Know the physical response: call 111 for police, fire or ambulance; if an earthquake is long or strong near the coast, move immediately to high ground or inland and do not wait for a notification. Keep entry confirmations, emergency contacts and accommodation details available offline. Enable alerts, yet follow local authorities, signs and evacuation instructions over any general app.
