Transit Apps in Nigeria

Lagos is the only Nigerian city where a visitor is likely to benefit from a dedicated public-transport app. The official Cowry fare system is used across regulated Lagos buses and the Blue and Red rail lines, with expanding ferry use. The current Android listing was updated in July 2026 and says the phone can browse bus and rail routes, buy tickets, and scan a QR code to tap in and out. The practical fallback remains a physical Cowry card bought and loaded through an agent at a terminal. This matters because the app describes bank funding, and a foreign card or non-Nigerian payment source may not work. Do not transfer money to an unofficial account claiming to top up the card. Ask a uniformed station agent, retain the card, and tap out at the end of rail or applicable bus journeys so the system records the correct trip. Cowry is Lagos-specific and does not make informal minibuses, motorcycle taxis, or public transport elsewhere suitable for an unfamiliar visitor. Current security advice, crowding, route knowledge, and time of day still matter. For a first visit or movement after dark, a verified app ride or trusted driver may be more appropriate than navigating an unfamiliar interchange. Google Maps does not reliably contain every local route or live departure. Install Cowry only if you intend to use Lagos BRT, rail, or other regulated services; otherwise a physical card at the station is sufficient and often simpler.
