A short-stay visitor does not need an Omani wallet or banking app. Thawani Pay, KhedmahPay, Friendi Pay and the new Maal card are domestic financial products, not universal wallets that turn any foreign card into local QR payment. Friendi Pay explicitly requires a valid national ID and an active Oman number. Thawani's current product centers on local bills, transfers, insurance, prepaid cards and merchant QR payments, with no official promise of frictionless tourist onboarding. Installing Google Wallet or Apple Wallet specifically for Oman is also unnecessary. A traveler can use an already supported home-issued card or wallet wherever the issuer and terminal accept it. International Visa and Mastercard cards are widely useful at hotels, malls, supermarkets, established restaurants and many small city businesses. Recent visitors still report needing cash occasionally, and Mastercard ATM acceptance can be less consistent than Visa. Carry a modest reserve of Omani rial for traditional markets, small shops, roadside stops, some taxis, rural areas and broken terminals. Use a bank ATM in a controlled location, inspect it, cover the PIN and review any local fee. Normally decline conversion into the card's home currency so the card network handles the exchange. Confirm the amount and currency before tapping, and keep two physical cards from different networks when possible. Oman requires businesses in covered sectors to offer electronic payment, but the legal ability to choose cash remains and does not guarantee acceptance of every foreign card or mobile wallet.
