Payments Apps in Puerto Rico

There is no visitor payment app to install. Puerto Rico uses the U.S. dollar, and credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, rental agencies, and established shops. Carry a modest reserve of small U.S.-dollar bills for parking, beach chairs, tips, roadside kiosks, small food stands, ferries or taxis on Vieques and Culebra, and any temporary card or network outage. ATH Móvil is genuinely important locally, but its own help center requires a phone number, email, and an ATH debit card linked to an account at a participating bank or credit union. It also says only regular or branded ATH debit cards from participating institutions can register. A mainland or foreign Visa or Mastercard is not enough merely because it carries that network logo. Remove ATH Móvil from the traveler shortlist and never tell visitors to link an ordinary U.S. bank account. Current local and traveler reports describe cards and contactless payment as common, including outside San Juan, but confirm before ordering because some small vendors accept only cash or ATH Móvil. Bring a physical debit card if cash withdrawals may be needed; contactless ATM and cash-back availability is inconsistent. Prefer a staffed bank or business ATM, review the operator fee, shield the PIN, and monitor the account. Carry a second card separately, enable transaction alerts before travel, and confirm the final amount before tapping. The useful setup is existing cards plus limited cash, not a Puerto Rican wallet account.
