What to know about Navigation in Saudi Arabia

Google Maps remains the best general navigation and place-discovery app for an international visitor, but it is not a complete source of truth. Riyadh construction, newly opened roads, venue traffic controls and complex interchanges can make a route, lane instruction or arrival time wrong. Current residents still prefer Google Maps overall, while reporting that both Google Maps and Waze can miss closures. Pin the exact terminal, station, hotel entrance, mosque gate or event parking area rather than only the venue name. Save the address in Arabic and keep a screenshot because a driver may recognize the original name more easily than an English transliteration. Download offline areas for Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah and any road-trip corridor before leaving reliable service, but remember that offline maps do not include live traffic or sudden restrictions. HudHud is a newer Saudi maps app with a Riyadh focus, yet its limited adoption, very large iOS download and current accuracy complaints do not justify another arrival install. Do not follow ordinary app routing onto sand, a closed road or a restricted area. AlUla's official guidance says visitors should drive only on graded or paved roads. For desert, border and remote routes, use the destination's official directions, a suitable vehicle, a charged phone and a planned fuel and communication fallback.
