What to know about Transit in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has no national urban-transit app. Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah use different systems. In Riyadh, darb is the official journey planner and ticket tool for the metro and bus network. The system accepts contactless bank cards and smart devices on buses, while darb remains useful for planning and account-based tickets. Its low store rating means a physical card and a screenshot of the route are sensible fallbacks. Makkah Bus operates 12 routes and its official app shows routes and live arrival estimates, but current App Store and Play reviews repeatedly report login, payment and missing-ticket failures. Use it for planning, then prefer a supported bank card on the vehicle validator where the published fare policy permits it. Madinah Bus is different again: its current official FAQ states that most routes cost SAR 3.45 during 2026, cash is not accepted, and Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay can be used directly onboard. That removes the need for its poorly rated app for most visitors. Jeddah Buses launched its current app-based system in 2025, but recent store reviews report routing and recharge problems, while foreign visitors report Saudi-number or access blocks. Check the live official service rather than relying on the app. During Hajj or major events, temporary transport plans, road closures and permit controls replace ordinary assumptions. Google Maps can assist with orientation, but the named city operator is the authority for fares, service hours and access.
