What to know about Payments in Saudi Arabia

A visitor does not need a Saudi payment app. Electronic payments accounted for 85 percent of retail payments in Saudi Arabia during 2025, and international card networks are accepted through much of the same point-of-sale infrastructure as mada. mada is the national domestic card network, not an app for tourists. STC Bank and other local wallets generally depend on Saudi identity or resident onboarding and do not improve an ordinary short visit. Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay operate in Saudi Arabia, but a traveler's ability to use them depends on the home bank, card network and wallet support. Keep the physical card because a wallet token, foreign card or app checkout can still fail. Carry a second card from a different issuer and a modest amount of SAR cash for small merchants, tips or outages. Tell the issuer about travel if required, keep access to its verification messages and know how online 3D Secure approvals will arrive when using a travel SIM. At a terminal or ATM, choose the charge in SAR rather than accepting an offered home-currency conversion unless the full converted cost is clearly better. Use ATMs attached to banks or controlled properties and do not accept help from a stranger. A merchant asking for a transfer to a personal wallet is not a reason to open a local account.
