What to know about Transit in South Africa

South Africa does not have one dependable nationwide urban-transit app. The two visitor-relevant official apps are regional. Gautrain serves Gauteng, linking OR Tambo International Airport with Sandton and connections toward Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Ekurhuleni. The official app provides schedules, fares, station information, Gautrain bus tracking, and card management. An occasional traveler can simply tap the same contactless bank card into and out of the system, including eligible bus and parking use, instead of buying a Gautrain card. One passenger needs one payment credential. Do not switch between a physical card and its phone-wallet token during the same journey because the system may treat them as different cards and apply a penalty. Current published service is roughly 05:30 to 20:30, so check the live schedule before using it for a flight. Do not walk to or from a Gautrain station after dark. MyCiTi is the official Cape Town bus app for routes, live arrival information, service alerts, stops, and fares. It does not turn a phone or ordinary bank card into a fare credential. Each rider still needs a myconnect card, loaded with value or an eligible pass, and must tap in and out. New cards sold from February 2026 can take one, three, or seven-day visitor-friendly passes. Coverage does not include all of Cape Town. Official safety advice describes MyCiTi as one of the safer public options in its central and Atlantic Seaboard coverage, but advises tourists not to use it into townships because violent incidents have occurred. Minibus taxis, Metrorail, long-distance trains, and other municipal buses require route-specific local research and should not be generalized from these two apps.

Pro tip: Buy and load a physical myconnect card because the app is not your ticket. Check whether the route covers both ends and whether the walking connection is safe.
