What to know before you go to Tajikistan

Rakhsh Taxi has the broadest current official city list, while Jura is prominent in Dushanbe, but recent visitors report that taxi-app registration can require a Tajik number and that drivers do not always accept promptly. Pre-arrange a licensed airport pickup for a critical arrival. In Dushanbe, Rohnamo now provides English offline routes for buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas on iOS and Android. There is no dependable national intercity booking app.

Shared cars usually leave from specific ranks when full, so confirm the rank and departure locally. Tajikistan remains cash-first, especially beyond major cities. Foreign Visa cards are generally the most dependable at urban ATMs, but carry a second card and enough somoni before rural travel. Local bank wallets are not normal tourist arrival tools.

Download a full offline map and any required GPX track before entering the mountains. Mobile service disappears in many valleys and villages, and a map cannot show a new landslide, flood or closure. GBAO requires a separate permit, permits can be suspended, and border conditions can change quickly. Check current official advice, the operator and local authorities immediately before a Pamir or border journey, and save emergency and tourism-police numbers offline.

Buying a local SIM card ID registration required

Registration
Registration against your passport is mandatory nationwide, and some operators or outlets go further, asking for a fingerprint or proof of where you are staying, so have your hotel booking to hand. You are limited to two SIM cards per person. Tourist police at Dushanbe airport and the land borders have historically issued a free 10-day Tcell SIM against a passport and e-visa; worth asking about, but do not build your plans around it.
Where to buy
Official Tcell, MegaFon, ZET-Mobile and Babilon-M stores in Dushanbe, Khujand, Bokhtar and other towns are the dependable route. Do not count on Dushanbe airport: reports differ on whether a working SIM counter exists there at all. Staff mostly speak Tajik and Russian, so an offline translator app genuinely helps, and many outlets are cash-only, so carry somoni.
Local eSIM
A travel eSIM is the pragmatic arrival plan: since you cannot rely on buying a SIM at Dushanbe airport, it keeps you online for the first day or two while you sort out a local SIM in the city, where data is cheaper.

Good to know

Coverage, not price, is the whole problem: on the Pamir Highway and in the Wakhan different operators work in different valleys and long stretches have no signal at all, so carrying two SIMs (typically Tcell plus MegaFon) is normal practice on that route. When buying, expect possible fingerprinting and a request for your address of stay. Bring cash in somoni.

Local carriers

  • Tcell

Generally the best coverage nationally and the usual recommendation, including the strongest current coverage in the Pamirs.

  • MegaFon Tajikistan

Russian-owned, with 4G in Dushanbe, Khujand and Bokhtar. Works in some Pamir valleys where Tcell does not.

  • Babilon-Mobile

Sells data packs called Mobipackets, historically valid for 90 days.

  • ZET-Mobile

The fourth operator, a fallback rather than a first pick.

Sources and how current this is

Data checked July 2026

Source dates: Prepaid Data SIM Card Wiki: retrieved 30 Jul 2026, indexed ~2 weeks old; the free-tourist-SIM entry describes a June 2019 scheme | Traveltomtom: ~9 Jul 2026 | Adventures of Nicole: 26 May 2026 | AraraTour (Central Asia tour operator): undated | Phone Travel Wiz: 18 Jan 2025 | Caravanistan forum: Apr 2019 (first-hand but seven years old; used for coverage structure only) | Gigago: 15 Aug 2024 (eSIM seller)

Sources disagree: Whether a SIM counter operates at Dushanbe airport is directly contradicted across 2026 sources; the exact registration requirements (fingerprinting, proof of stay) vary by account; the free tourist SIM dates to a 2019 scheme with no current confirmation; and all pricing is 2024 or older, so prices are omitted.
