Payments Apps in Tanzania

Use Tanzanian shillings for ordinary local payments. Bank of Tanzania's May 2025 notice says prices and payments for goods and services within Tanzania must be in TZS. Tourists should exchange foreign cash through a commercial bank or licensed bureau de change, while bank cards and other digital payment methods remain allowed. Cards are common at larger hotels, lodges, airlines, supermarkets, and higher-end restaurants, but they are not universal and terminals or ATMs can fail. Carry two physical cards and a modest TZS reserve. Use an ATM inside a bank during opening hours, shield the PIN, reject help, and decline home-currency conversion unless its full cost is genuinely better. Confirm card surcharges and the TZS total before approval. M-Pesa Tanzania is optional, not essential. It can be very useful for an independent or longer trip, bus tickets, local merchants, and sending an exact amount without carrying much cash. Official Vodacom rules allow a visitor SIM to be registered with passport documentation and biometric verification, and the M-Pesa account is attached to an active Vodacom SIM. The app must first activate on that SIM using Tanzania mobile data, although USSD remains available. Registration quality can vary by outlet, so use an official Vodacom shop or clearly identified agent and never accept a SIM registered to someone else. Load only what you expect to spend, check the recipient name, amount, and fee, and retain the message. For a short guided safari or resort stay, cards plus TZS cash are simpler. Mixx by Yas, formerly Tigo Pesa, duplicates the wallet setup and has no compelling visitor advantage, so it is omitted.
