VNG reported 79.6 million monthly active users in 2025, and the official Zalo blog reported 80.2 million at the end of the first quarter of 2026. Hotels, guides, drivers, clinics, landlords and small businesses may use it for directions, pickup details, receipts or follow-up support. A short-stay visitor does not automatically need a Zalo account if every booking already uses email, WhatsApp or a platform chat, but it becomes useful as soon as a local contact requests it. Zalo's official FAQ says registration supports mobile networks across many countries, yet recent foreign users still report awkward verification calls, missing codes or disabled accounts.
If you know you will need it, install and attempt registration before the trip while your normal number can receive calls and messages. If that fails, ask the business for another channel rather than allowing a stranger to create an account for you. Facebook Messenger is also common, while WhatsApp is more useful with internationally oriented hotels and tours than with the wider local population. Keep booking conversations inside the original platform when possible so support can see them.
Treat unsolicited investment offers, prize notices, government impersonation and urgent money requests as suspicious. Never send a passport image, card photo, OTP or banking login through a new chat without independently verifying the recipient. Save the accommodation address and important phone numbers offline because no messenger replaces a direct emergency call. Police reports and emergency lines may require Vietnamese-language help.
