Public transportation apps, curated for travelers visiting Vietnam.
Urban public transport is useful but fragmented by city. MultiGo is Ho Chi Minh City's official English-capable app for buses, Metro Line 1, waterbus links and live arrivals. As of August 2026, city bus fares are waived under the policy introduced on 1 July, including for visitors, although passengers should still follow any instruction to tap or scan so the trip is recorded. This policy can change, so recheck MultiGo and posted notices. Metro Line 1 between Bến Thành and Suối Tiên accepts station tickets and contactless international card payments at the gates. Use the same card or device to tap in and out. In Hanoi, Tìm Buýt is Transerco's official bus app with English support, route planning, live arrivals and offline route information. Hanoi Metro currently operates Line 2A and the elevated section of Line 3.1. A foreign visitor can register in the Hà Nội Metro app with a passport and portrait, but official approval may take about three days. For a short visit, buying a single QR ticket at the station or tapping a supported Visa card is simpler; one card can cover only one passenger at a time. Do not assume one city app covers another city or every private route. Google Maps can help cross-check, while posted station signs and staff are the source of truth. City buses may require a clear hand signal at the stop, and onboard English announcements are inconsistent. Keep small đồng outside HCMC, track the vehicle on the map and allow extra time during rush hour or heavy rain.
