Payments Apps in Albania

No Albanian payment app is worth installing for an ordinary short visit.

Bring a physical Visa or Mastercard, a second card kept separately and enough Albanian lek for everyday cash-only situations. Albania's tourism authority says cards are common at banks, large supermarkets and international hotels while small businesses usually accept only cash. Current travelers report much better card acceptance in Tirana and major coastal resorts than a few years ago, but taxis, city buses, markets, small cafes, guesthouses, museums and rural businesses remain inconsistent. Ask before ordering when card payment matters.

The lek, code ALL, is the national currency. Euros are sometimes accepted or used for a quote, especially in tourism, but the exchange rate and change may be poor. Pay in lek unless a clear euro price is genuinely better. Some people still speak in old lek by adding a zero to the current note value; ask to see the amount written on the bill or terminal.

Bank-operated ATMs are widespread in cities and tourist areas, but owner fees for foreign cards can be substantial and vary. Read the full fee screen, cancel and compare another bank if needed. If an ATM or card terminal offers conversion into your home currency, choose ALL and let your own issuer convert. Exchange only at a bank or licensed bureau, compare its buy rate with the Bank of Albania reference and count the cash before leaving.

Revolut or Wise may be useful cards for an eligible existing customer, but neither is a local Albania app, neither guarantees acceptance and neither removes the ATM owner's charge.
