Translation and language tools, curated for travelers visiting Chile.
Spanish is the language needed for ordinary travel in Chile.
Useful for Spanish text, signs, menus and downloaded language files when mobile data is unavailable.
English support is available at some hotels, major attractions and international tourism businesses, but it should not be assumed in local buses, small restaurants, pharmacies, clinics or emergencies. Chilean speech can be fast and contains distinctive vocabulary, so even travelers who learned Spanish elsewhere may need to ask people to repeat or write information. Google Translate is useful for typed text, camera translation and downloaded Spanish, but offline mode has fewer capabilities and neither mode reliably resolves slang, handwriting or safety-critical ambiguity. Download Spanish before arrival, use short literal sentences and keep the original text visible beside the translation.
Save your accommodation address, itinerary, medical conditions and essential phrases as screenshots so they remain available without data. For transport, useful terms include efectivo for cash, tarjeta for card, crédito, débito, sin cuotas for no installments, and terminal de buses for an intercity terminal. Alergia grave, ambulancia and Carabineros are important emergency terms. Do not use an automated translation as the only safeguard for a severe allergy, medical consent, police statement, rental-car damage report or legal document.
Ask for a professional interpreter or a trusted bilingual person when a misunderstanding could affect health, money or legal rights. On Rapa Nui, Spanish is widely used alongside the Rapa Nui language; use local names respectfully and do not assume translated place names are interchangeable in every booking.
