Download the destination area before leaving reliable coverage and save the accommodation, terminal and emergency meeting points. Offline maps can still show your GPS position and driving route, but they do not preserve live traffic, transit arrivals, closures or every walking route. This matters in Patagonia, the high Andes, national parks and long stretches of the Carretera Austral, where Chile's tourism authority warns that signal can be intermittent. A road shown on the map may be unpaved, seasonally closed, ferry-dependent or unsuitable for the rental car, so verify remote routes with the operator, accommodation, ferry company or road authority before departure.

Google Maps is not a backcountry safety system. For hiking, use the current official park information, follow signed trails, check weather and closures, and carry an offline topographic map appropriate to the specific route. Do not treat an old user track as proof that a trail is open or safe. Many protected areas sell dated entry passes through the official Pases Parques site; download the ticket because reception at the gate may be weak.

In cities, set the route while inside a building or vehicle and use audio directions rather than walking with an unlocked phone in view. Confirm that two places with similar Spanish names are in the right region before starting a long trip.
