In Santiago, Red Movilidad is the official planner for buses, Metro and MetroTren Nos, with live arrivals and disruption notices. Since 13 February 2026, enabled contactless Visa and Mastercard credit, debit and prepaid cards, including supported phone wallets, can be tapped directly on Santiago Metro and MetroTren Nos. Use the same physical card or the same wallet device throughout a Metro and train transfer. This open-loop payment does not yet work on Red buses.
For any trip involving a bus, a physical anonymous Bip card remains the most straightforward visitor option and provides the normal integrated fare across Red modes. Buy and load it at an official point. Red's Bip QR account requires Chile's ClaveÚnica, so ordinary foreign tourists should not plan around that digital feature, though the app's journey planning works without it. Outside Santiago, Red Regional is the official live-information app for participating services in more than 20 cities, but it does not create one national fare system and its vehicle feed can be incomplete.
Payment varies by city: bank cards already work on some systems such as Chillán and Temuco, while cash, local cards or separate rail media remain necessary elsewhere. Check the local operator or MTT information for the exact city, carry small CLP notes and coins as backup, and do not assume a Bip card works in Valparaíso or another region.
