Waze is the stronger companion when driving because Costa Rican users contribute traffic, hazard and road information heavily, and the tourism authority itself recommends both services. Neither app is a road-safety authority and either can choose an unsuitable shortcut. Download the required Google Maps areas before leaving reliable service, save the accommodation's exact entrance and confirm whether the destination pin refers to reception, parking, a trailhead or a boat landing. Costa Rican addresses can be descriptive and landmark-based, so send the pin plus the written directions supplied by the property.
Before a rural or mountain drive, ask the accommodation or rental company about the intended route, surface, river crossings, bridge restrictions and whether a 4x4 is required.
