Utilities Apps in Cuba

No branded VPN, weather, carrier, or emergency app should be labeled essential.

If a traveler already needs a reputable VPN, install, subscribe, sign in, update, and test it before departure because provider sites and app stores may be difficult to reach from Cuba. Official Canadian advice recommends installing a VPN before travel, but no service can guarantee access during blocking, a tower outage, or a national power failure. No single VPN is a Cuba-specific essential. Connectivity uses ETECSA's Cubacel network.

A Cubacel Tur physical SIM can provide the Cuban number needed by La Nave and may be more useful than a data-only travel eSIM, but purchase, pickup, activation, validity, and current airport availability must be verified directly. Guac's current inventory does not list Cuba, and many travel eSIM providers have limited or no coverage. Any eSIM that does connect still depends on ETECSA infrastructure and local electricity. Download maps, Spanish, tickets, insurance, contacts, entertainment, and documents before departure.

Carry high-capacity power banks, charging cables, a small light, and paper backups within airline battery rules. Keep water, necessary medicine, and a practical food reserve based on current official advice. During a long outage, conserve battery, disable background data, and do not assume mobile service will return quickly. Save 104 ambulance, 105 fire, and 106 police, plus airline, host, insurer, and consular contacts.

Check government travel advice and the operating airline each day because the situation can deteriorate quickly.
